When I was named the 2008 Kentucky Teacher of the Year, I had no idea what amazing experiences the upcoming year would hold for me. First of all, I gained new perspectives on education—a more national and even global perspective. I’ve had a chance to interact with many teachers and national educational leaders from across America. I participated in discussions about assessment, national standards, and a myriad of other educational topics. Through all of this, one of the most important beliefs I came away with is that we do things right in Kentucky. After this year, I have never been more confident that the place I can make the most impact on education is in my own seventh grade language arts classroom. It’s there that the magic occurs. The classroom truly provides the foundation to increase student achievement in our local schools, state and nation. Being a part of the Kentucky Teacher of the Year program has made me a better teacher, leader and overall a better person. Even though I no longer hold the title, the knowledge and skills I obtained during my tenure will be used to enhance the educational experience of the kids I teach for years to come. So, I encourage you to apply. Chandra Holloway Emerson |
